Healing Massages Come in Different Types and Touches

We don't expect you to be a massage expert in order to heal your body. We just need you to share a little bit of your story. We will shape your past and current position into an understanding as to what you need. All we need from you is a clear picture of what you feel today and how it got that way. We will take that picture and turn it into a brand new you. Here are a few examples of what you might expect...

Connecting with your tissues and issues

What is connective tissue? Connective tissue is a tissue that connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs, typically having relatively few cells embedded in an amorphous matrix, often with collagen or other fibers, and including cartilaginous, fatty, and elastic tissues.

What is connective tissue massage? A form of massage that specifically manipulates the connective tissues (fascia, ligaments and tendons of the musculoskeletal system), with the aim of enhancing circulation and, by extension, healing. The technique consists of dragging motions with hooked fingers, which are believed to stimulate the trigger zones that refer pain to elsewhere in the body. In ourpractice we use little to no oil with this particular massage.

Connective tissue massage techniques :

  1. Lifting- Strokes that lift the dermis layer of the skin off of the underlining ( superficial) fascia. Sinking in deeper, lift the individual layers of tissues ( muscles), from each other.  These strokes are great for increasing space, blow flow, nerve stimulation, tissue detoxification and hydrating the muscle.

  2. Spreading- Strokes that move across , or perpendicular to the fibers of a muscle, a muscle group, or fascial sheets. These strokes are intended to widen what is too narrow. This stroke helps hydrates the spaces between fibers, they make space, give more room to expand.

  3. Differentiations/Separation- Strokes that work in finger lines between muscles and muscle groups. Moving form attachment to attachment. This stroke is the deepest, most specific contact with connective tissue. This creates space for greater freedom of nerve impingement, blood flow and lymphatic drainage.

Getting a Little bit Deeper...

What is Deep Tissue Massage? Deep tissue  massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).

Deep tissue massage techniques:

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)?  NMT is a form of massage, which is distinguished from other types of massage in that static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of the musculoskeletal system. The goal of NMT is stop bring about balance between the musculoskeletal  system and the nervous system. This technique manipulated the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin and facia) to enhance harmony between the muscular system and the nervous system.

This stroke assists with lymphatic and venous return and also provides a passive stretch to the muscles.

  2. Petrissage – Are strokes which knead, repeatedly lifting and grasping and releasing tissue. Lifts muscle mass and wrings or squeezes it gently. There is no gliding except for moving to another area of the body. This stroke is primarily used on the muscle belly. This stroke  helps free adhesions, increases circulation and takes the pressure off nerves by relaxing the muscles.

  3. Friction - Is a movement which compresses and moves the superficial tissue over the deeper tissue. There is no sliding except from one are to another.  This technique helps break up deposit, diminishes scar tissue and also increases circulation.

  4. Tapotement – Strokes which strike with brief, brisk, rapid alternating contacts to the tissue. Movement comes from the wrist , which are loose and relaxed. This stroke stimulates the nervous system and  loosens up phlegm.
